Here are two short video clips from two of the leading authorities on the value of mindfulness, the first pillar of Resilience. First renowned neuroscientist Sara Lazar reports on her groundbreaking research where she provided the positive neurological changes to the brain from just eights weeks of meditating.

The Body Scan

This meditation exercise takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Preferably you complete it while lying down. However it is okay to complete it sitting comfortably in a quit area. The Body Scan teaches you to not only maintain your focus – but to shift it with intent as well.

If you practice The Body Scan seven out of eight days for eight weeks you will increase the density [i.e. power] of your brains neural circuits responsible for short term member, perception, decision-making, social interaction, and emotional control.

A few tips. While you are meditating your mind will drift away to thoughts of yesterday or tomorrow, feelings, memories, fantasies. This is what our mind does. The goal of meditation is to let these thoughts and feelings occur without “latching on to them” and having them take us away from what we are focusing on.

The Three Minute Breathing Meditation

The Three Minute Breathing Meditation has several benefits. First, like the Body Scan it increases your ability to focus. Also like the Body Scan it brings down your stress level and creates a state of relaxed awareness.

It’s a good idea to try and practice the Three Minute Breathing Meditation two or three times during the work down. It will center you, improve your focus, enable clearer decisions, and increase your confidence and presence.

The Basic Walking Meditation

The Basic Walking Meditation provides you with the basic framework to practice meditating as you walk from place to place during the context of your day. Many people find it a more pragmatic way of building regular meditation into the day then techniques [i.e. Three Minute Breathing Meditation] which requires sitting in place.
